The neurology department does not discriminate among applicants on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, age, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, creed, arrest or conviction record (unless substantially related to job duties), disability, military status, or retaliation.

Basic Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have completed an accredited neurology residency. We seek well-rounded candidates with a track record of accomplishments and training performance indicating good potential in vascular neurology.

The program director complies with the criteria for fellow eligibility specified in the Institutional Requirements. The program’s educational resources are adequate to support the number of fellows appointed to the program. The presence of other learners in the program is monitored so as to not interfere with the fellow’s education.

Applicants must either be U.S. citizens, have permanent legal residency status (i.e., hold a green card), or be eligible for a J-1 clinical visa sponsored by the ECFMG. Please note that our institution does not sponsor temporary worker (H-1) visas.

All candidates must meet the UWHC requirements for appointment as per the policy titled University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Appointment Information for Residents and Fellows in Graduate Medical Education Programs. This document is provided to all applicants prior to the interview day.

Application Process

Applications to our program are only accepted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS); our ACGME ID# is 1885621064. The NRMP program code for the program is 1779188F0.

All applications are reviewed by the Recruitment Committee, which will evaluate each application with regard to the following:

  • Academic transcript
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean’s letter—once available)
  • Letters of recommendation (one from current program director)
  • Research experience
  • Personal statement
  • USMLE  or COMLEX-USA scores

The program director will review each application with regard to prior academic performance, communication, extracurricular activities, research accomplishments, and letters of recommendation. The most promising applicants are invited for an interview. Applicants accepted for interview will meet the program director, current fellows, and the other vascular neurology faculty, in addition to other faculty inside and outside the department depending on their availability and the interests of the candidate.

Following completion of interviews for invited candidates, the vascular neurology faculty will meet and decide which of the candidates will be ranked.
