University Hospital and ClinicsThe Department of Neurology provides inpatient care to patients with neurological, neurosurgical and ophthalmological disorders. The unit includes an intensive care facility for management of patients with acute conditions such as coma, status epilepticus, and neurological disorders accompanied by pulmonary dysfunction. Neurological patients with hemodynamic instability, elevated intracranial pressure, and other conditions requiring intensive medical and surgical support are admitted to other intensive care units in the University Hospital, where management responsibility is shared with attending staff of the specific intensive care unit. Outpatient care is provided by the Department of Neurology in general neurology, urgent care, and specialty clinics. Specialty clinics provide care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, cerebrovascular diseases, epilepsy, headaches, movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, pain, and sleep disorders. The Department also provides general neurological consultation services at a variety of locations throughout central and southern Wisconsin.

William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans HospitalThe Department of Neurology provides clinical services, conducts research programs, and operates educational programs for medical students and residents at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The clinical, educational, and research activities of the VA Neurology Service are integral and essential components of the overall mission of the Department of Neurology. The VA is an important source of training and educational experience for medical students, residents, and fellows, and is fully integrated with activities at the University Hospital. As the two institutions are located in adjoining buildings, there is easy access and interaction between staff at each facility. The Neurology Service at the VA provides primary neurological care for veterans and offers subspecialty services in epilepsy, cerebrovascular diseases, degenerative, and geriatric conditions. There are also specialty clinics in swallowing disorders and neuropathic pain. The Francis M. Forster Epilepsy Center, a major component of the Department’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, is one of eight nationally designated VA Epilepsy Centers and provides a full range of diagnostic, medical, and surgical treatment services for veterans with epilepsy in the VA Central Region. 20 South Park and MeriterMeriter Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the Midwest to establish such an acute care treatment program for neurological, stroke and neurosurgical postoperative care. Locally, the program at Meriter was the first to offer electroencephalogram (EEG) services, including EEG monitoring during surgery. This program's quality is further enhanced through its affiliation with an exceptional group of clinical specialists in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, orthopedic spine surgery and others.
Clinical Neurodiagnostic LaboratoriesThe Department of Neurology operates clinical neurodiagnostic laboratories for the evaluation of patients with disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. These services, available at both the University Hospital and the William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital, include conventional electroencephalography, prolonged video–EEG studies, evoked potentials, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, muscle never biopsy and quantitative sensory testing. The Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratories are closely associated with activities of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Neuromuscular Diseases. The Charles Matthews Laboratory of NeuropsychologyThe section of Neuropsychology was established in September, 1962. Hallgrim Klove, Ph.D. was appointed Director of the Section. He was succeeded by Charles G. Matthews, PhD, who played a major role in the development of Neuropsychology as a major area of Psychology in the US and abroad. Neuropsychology has examined more than 23,000 patients since 1962, and has an extensive database of cognitive testing results. The Neuropsychology Section has offered a postdoctoral training program since 1963. This program is perhaps the oldest, nationally recognized postdoctoral training program in the USA and Canada. Over 35 psychologists have completed the training program and are now employed in a variety of clinical–research and academic positions throughout the country. The impact of this training on the development of neuropsychology was recognized in 1992 by the presentation by the American Psychological Association of a lifetime achievement award to Dr. Matthews for his contributions to education and training of psychologists.
